So you have signed up for a class with Sarah and are wondering now what? Usually you will be provided with a class supply list if you are expected to purchase materials prior to class or have special items (like pictures or ephemera) you need to have to complete your project. This is a list of some rules Sarah has found over the years that make life in a classroom with many other folks a better experience as well as a list of things you should always have on hand "just in case".

Rules:

What, you thought there were no rules? Yes, there are always rules, if there weren't, we'd have no boundaries and no absolutes. We have absolutes. Here are Sarah's rules:

Have fun. this class is to enrich your artistic journey. She is prone to doing some rather interesting things during class to keep your attention and enhance your recall ability later when you try out what you have learned.

It is expected that you will actually go home and play with the techniques and things Sarah has taught you. If you don't, you've just wasted your tuition fees. Taking classes is a VERB! You have to do.

Don't be concerned with those around you. Your work is not to be compared to anyone else's. This is YOUR journey, YOUR exploration and YOUR time to discover. There are no wrong answers in art- Your project may or may not look like the sample. THIS IS OK! You are not here to copy what Sarah made. You are here to learn HOW she made it so you can use that knowledge in your own creations.

Send your creations to Sarah- she loves to see what you have done. If you are using Art Declassified Stamps, send them your handiwork, they love to see that stuff too.

Come to class prepared (leave the worries of the world at the door). Sarah wants your undivided attention. Have a notebook and paper to take notes and your basic kit (see below) to assist you. It is easier to create when you don't have to wait on someone else to pass you the supplies or empty glue stick (it always happens folks)

Dress for mess- no matter how hard she tries, you will get messy one way or another in Sarah's classes. As she fondly reminds everyone, wear your grubbies not your pearls!

Have fun! (Yes, this is rule #1, she just wanted to remind you that this is the reason you take classes in the first place)

Turn off your cell phones.... if you are a doctor (in real life....not one that you play on TV) and are needed in surgery or have sick kids at home that may need you, set it to vibrate and sit nearest to the closest exit in case you have to get up and leave....

Label all your stuff BEFORE you come to class....anything not marked is Sarah's

If there are printed materials (hand-outs and such) these are for your PERSONAL use. they are not to be scanned and emailed to all your friends all over the planet who did not attend class, they are not to be copied and used in a class you decide to teach and handed out as if they were your own work (this would be pirating) and, lastly, they are not to be given to others. Please understand, Sarah teaches to earn a living and support her family.

The Basic Kit:

Please take note that there will be supply lists given with your class descriptions but, having a basic kit is always a good idea to have whenever you take a class.

A Basic Black ink pad ( I like VersaFine or Ranger's Archival ink) something that can be heat set and waterproof when dry.

An embossing pad (VersaMark is a good one or Ranger's Distress Embossing pad).

A solvent based black ink (Staz On is my first choice, I also carry one in Timber Brown as well.

A variety of dye based ink pads (Ranger's Distress Pads are good) and your choice of stamps (Art Declassified are a suggestion), stamp cleaner or baby wipes, ruler, Excel Craft Knife (Exacto are fine too), a paper cutter, scissors, pencil, adhesives of choice, clear and black embossing powders, heat gun, water pen or small paintbrush, craft sheet, Zig Markers, Self healing mat, bone folder, and whatever else you want to pack.

Think primarily about the class you are taking (if it calls for pictures of various sizes or trinkets for embellishing, you will want to add those things to your kit. If it is a calligraphy class or something, you may want to bring more pens and leave the embossing powder; it is up to you) You do not need the kitchen sink. If you forget something, there is bound to be someone sitting close by who has what you are missing and will be more than happy to let you borrow it (stampers are just friendly folks.... they share)
